Rating and classification

Every fire door location is traceable to a code clause.
Typical drivers: openings in fire-resistant walls (120 min), exit staircase access (120 min), lift lobbies (120 min), exit passageways (120 min), horizontal exits (120 min), sleeping/patient corridors (20 min self-closing under NBC 2016; 30 min under NBCS 2026), industrial hazard rooms (180 min). NBC P4 3.4.5.2 / 4.4.2.4.3.2(h)(2) / 4.6.1 / 2.39 / 6.7.1(m)
The full IS 3614 designation is written, not just minutes.
"FD 120" alone is ambiguous after Amendment No. 1 (2023). Write FD 120 UD, FD 120 PI or FD 120 ID (insulation = integrity → ID; ≥ 30 min → PI; below → UD). IS 3614 cl. 5, Amd 1
Exit doors carry an insulation criterion.
20 min under NBC 2016 (2.22 Note 2); raised to 30 min under NBCS 2026 Part F. Integrity-only (UD) doors do not satisfy either note on exit routes. Decide deliberately where PI suffices and where ID is warranted (defend-in-place, hospitals, hotels, refuge routes). NBC 2.22 N2 / NBCS F 2.22 N2
Ratings are within the standard's limits.
Hinged doors max 180 min integrity; rolling shutters max 240 min. Wooden composite doorsets: 30/60/120 min options. IS 3614 5.4 / 7.3.3
Door type matches the opening
(hinged metal / hinged wooden composite / sliding / rolling shutter). Lift landing doors are excluded from IS 3614 and covered by the lift standards. IS 3614 7.1 / 1.2
UD is confined to genuine non-exit compartmentation
(e.g. plant-to-plant separation, non-exit storage walls). Verify the route classification on plan before any UD line item survives the schedule. NBCS F 2.22 N2; mfr guidance
Fire curtains are not exits.
Where a fire curtain is used for compartmentation, an independent fire door meeting the exit-door requirement is provided within the prescribed travel distance. 2.22 Note 5 (both editions)

Ironmongery and certification
0/9
Hardware is part of the doorset.
If the door manufacturer does not supply the certified hardware with the assembly, the door "shall be construed as non-fire rated". Do not split door and ironmongery packages. IS 3614 7.2.9
All functional hardware type-tested and certified for fire door use
at the specified rating, with visible certification labels; hardware type-test certificates not older than five years. IS 3614 7.2.9
Exemptions only as written:
SS 304+ hinges ≥ 100×75×3 mm and SS 304+ pull handles need no separate fire certificate. IS 3614 7.2.9
Prohibited items absent from the schedule:
tower bolts, aldrops, slide bolts, chains with padlocks; mechanical hold-open units; fail-secure electric locking on escape routes (fail-safe only). IS 3614 7.2.9(k)/(c)
Self-closing without exception;
hold-opens electrified and released by fire/smoke detection (this is also how hospital compartment doors are to work). IS 3614 7.2.9(p); NBC P4 6.3.2
Latching logic matches the test:
doors tested latched are supplied latched; deadlock-only use only where tested unlatched. IS 3614 7.2.9
Panic hardware:
bars at 865–1220 mm where the occupancy clause requires; under NBCS 2026 (2.22 Note 6), panic-bar doors at designated re-entry floors also need an outside handle/trim lock — identify those floors with the fire consultant and mark them on the schedule. NBC P4 6.1.1.4; NBCS F 2.22 N6
Combined fire + acoustic doors specified as one tested product
(hotel guest rooms, wards, OT/ICU): both test certificates for the same construction; acoustic seals must not displace the fire-tested seals and hardware. mfr guidance; acoustic clause refs pending
Door viewers:
fire rated, ≤ 19 mm hole, factory-prepared, capped at 60 min rating for doors above 60 min. IS 3614 7.2.9(f)
